Roseberry Topping, North York Moors

Sun goes down over Cleveland Hills

Feeling the need to walk off the excesses of Christmas day we took a walk up Roseberry Topping in the North York Moors. The site is managed by the National Trust and there is a convenient car park next to a pub in Newton under Roseberry. Setting off in the afternoon the sun was low in the sky and casting a reddish glow over the landscape. For the most part the sky was clear but with occaisional dark cloud creating quite a spectacular sight.

The temparature was a few degrees at the base and must have been around freezing near the top with ice and frost laying around and a bitterly cold wind. There wasn't a great deal of interest on the wildlife front. The yellow gorse (below left) was flowering and the only fungi I could find were these small unidentified ones below right.

My hands almost froze in the strong wind at the top taking pictures of the sun going down but the views over the Cleveland Hills were great.
