drupal.org

I was never quite happy with the old phpnuke site. Much of the site took a lot of php hacking to get it to look and function right. There were also ongoing concerns about security. I've been hunting around for a while now for the right replacement and fortunately came across a blog that mentioned drupal was worth a look. And here it is.

squash ladder PHP

Squash ladder is a complete browser based application that runs a sports ladder. If you have not heard of a sports ladder before it is a type of league that operates in many racket sports (tennis, badminton, squash, table tennis etc), normally on a paper wall chart. Players are ranked from first to last. A player in the ladder may challenge any player up to x number of places above them.

Connection refused with firefox

Since installing Fedora Core 3 on my laptop I have been unable to access web sites with Firefox on an intermittent basis. The usual pattern is that google and most search engines produce a 'Connection refused...' error. What's doubly annoying is of course the first thing you do on getting an error like this is to google the answer! How many times did I try to do that - doh!

There were certain other sites I couldn't access too. I downloaded Knoppix and ran linux from a CD but still had the same error.

Best free CSS editor ?

I'm used to HTML and tables for layout and cascading style sheets (CSS) don't yet feel intuitive to me. I do use Dreamweaver MX 2004 but the design view doesn't often accurately reflect the changes I make. After googling around for a decent CSS editor I was ready to gave up.

By chance I stumbled across a fabulous freeware CSS editor that displays layout changes on the fly. It's an extension for Mozilla Firefox called Web Developer Extension and it's written by Chris Pederick.

Rounded corners and CSS

My intention with the squash ladder is to allow the layout to be completely customised by users via the use of cascading style sheets. The home page http://squash-ladder.net/home.php is based on a google blog template. I particularly like the clean simple look and the rounded corners on the boxes. I'd like to develop the rest of the ladder pages along the same lines and came across this really great trick which will help...

Wireless on Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 with Fedora

Wireless on Toshiba Satellite Pro 4600 with Fedora Core 3 (FC3) Linux

It took me the best part of 6 months to sort this out and I am posting this here in the hope it might help others...

I was happily using the integrated wireless on my Toshiba Satellite Pro with Redhat 9 and Fedora Core 1 (FC1) but on upgrading to Fedora Core 2 (FC2) and also FC3 the wireless card would not work. I tried all sorts of things but to no avail. I googled around and wasted hours, probably days on this and had resolved myself to using FC1 and struggling without my USB stick, wireless and sound.

This week I thought I'd give it a final go and thanks to greeners in this thread http://www.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2550 there was the answer

Google and deepblue

After patiently waiting for Google to index my pages I have noticed that few of the forum posts are being indexed. I am in the process of applying some fixes to change this. If you find any of the links are not working or that the forums are not working please let me know ASAP.

Random Number Generator added

My simple PHP random number generator has been converted to a PHPNuke module. This was a bit of an
experiment to see how easily I might convert the squash ladder to a Nuke module. It seems to work OK!
